Russia is by no means the birthplace of the poster, but it is namely she who was destined to eventually lead the world in poster art.For it was here that the anti-capitalist poster became one of the main weapons of a state ideology set on world domination. Posters actively helped to instil the ideal of a struggle against capitalism in the minds of the people. The great communist experiment, it would seem, had a real chance of success not only in our country, but throughout the world. Whatever the case Communism – attractive idea as it was – proved itself capable of uniting untold masses of people.Comparison of the new progressive regime with the old defunct Capitalist system was the recurrent propaganda theme of communist ideology; something which attracted, ennervated and called for action.
The anti-capitalist poster was one of the basic genres throughout the Soviet period up until the final years of the USSR's existence, when the failure of the "great communist experiment" became inevitable and plain for all to see.
Has the anti-capitalist poster faded into history forever? Of course not. The search for a more acceptable political system will continue. And given that fact, the struggle against capitalism with the aid of the poster may well take on a new lease of life. Far from seeking to encourage any struggle against world capitalism, we would simply wish to draw your attention to a certain category of posters which, in our opinion, might well find a ready market in today's world – first and foremost thanks to the talent of those great artists and men of letters responsible for creating these Masterpieces of Poster Art.
